BP1
Ballistic Pendulum
The
BP1 contains two giant 20-LED bar graphs mounted along
the height of the support legs. When the pendulum block
moves back in response to an incident missile the bar
graphs display a number of LEDs which in turn can be
used to interpret the swing angle of the pendulum. As
well as the LEDs there is an acoustic indication of
swing angle where the tone pitch rises with the swing
angle.

"The ballistic pendulum was
actually used to measure the velocity of projectiles
in ballistics factories. As a lecture demonstration,
it is best associated with Lord Kelvin - he used to
have an elephant gun fired into a large ballistic pendulum
during his undergraduate lectures. As well as waking
up his students, it provided a model for angular momentum
and energy discussions...."
