capacitor
The
capacitor case demonstrates the charging and discharging of
a low voltage capacitor, and allows various novel ways of
showing energy transformation.

"The capacitor stores about 100 Joules
of energy - that's the same as a 100W light bulb releases
every second. When we discharge the capacitor into a copper
plate, then energy is released very quickly indeed - so fast
that the current peaks at over 200 Amps - over 400 times more
than the light bulb consume!"

Content
Overview
The
case contains a 0.15F capacitor, a battery pack to charge
the capacitor and a selection of accessories through which
the capacitor can be discharged. The accessories include a
filament lamp and LED to show how the energy stored in the
capacitor can be released as light and heat, a siren to demonstrate
conversion of the capacitor's energy into mechanical energy
and then into sound. A miniature jumping ring is also included,
as well as copper clad plates to show the abrupt release of
the capacitor's energy across a short circuit.

Graphics
Overview
A
set of six full colour A3 graphics laminates is included.
These illustrate how to use the various items in the case,
and provide some background information on key concepts and
applications. The graphics also highlight links to related
concepts in other cases for exanding the scope of your presentations.
