The
spinning coin elaborates on the trick of spinning a coin on
a table. Here, the combination of low friction and a curved
base results in a fantastic display of rolling from the disc,
which can persist for over two minutes. Concepts include angular
momentum, precession, and friction.

Curiously, the duration of the spin has very little to do
with how fast, you set it spinning - this is a neglible effect

Content
Overview
The
case contains three different coins along with the spinning
base. An electronic timer is included in order to time the
duration of the spin. Two of the discs have recessed magnets
which interact with an electrical stobe circuit built into
the base. If desired, the base can be made to freeze out the
fast roll of the coin, emphasising that as the coin roll speeds
up the precessional motion slows down. In a darkened room
this leads to a dramatic hovering-type effect as the motion
nears its end. The strobe is powered by a supplied 6V mains
adapter.
