eddy
magnet drop
The
eddy magnet drop demonstrates very visually the interaction
of a moving magnetic field in a conductor. As well as the
electrical lessons involved in this demonstration, there are
also valuable points to be made about viscous damping and
the effect of temperature on electrical conductivity.

"Normally, when an object falls under
gravity it changes all its potential energy to kinetic energy.
In the case of the magnet falling past the metal rods, over
99.9% of the magnet's initial potential energy is lost in
heating the bar during the fall!"

Overview
The
case contains two heavy bases and a range of metal and plastic
rods. The rods can be fitted together in any combination to
give a changing pattern of travel for the falling magnet.
The magnets provided are rare earth ring magnets which are
dropped over the outside of the rods. The retardation force
induced by the effect of eddy currents is clear to see, and
is spectacular if liquid nitrogen is available to cool the
rods. The case includes two ring magnets and a 'dummy magnet'
as well as three different types of metal rod - brass, aluminium
and copper.
