"The Chinese used magnetic iron ore to navigate the oceans over a thousand years ago. These days we have magnetic materials that are hundreds of times more powerful, like these Neodymium Iron Boron magnets - almost impossible to pull straight apart!"

Content Overview

The case contains a jar of lodestone and a suspension to allow discussions on the early navigation experiments using magnetic iron ore. A selection of magnets of various shape and strength are included, which together with the pole patterns magnetic field viewer can be used to demonstrate magnetic lines of force. Small compasses are supplied to perfrom the traditional field charting experiment, as well as a selection of metals to show which are magnetic and which are non-magnetic. A levitator toy is also supplied which allows one ring magnet to spin and float above another.

Graphics Overview

A set of A3 graphic laminates is included. These illustrate how to use the various items in the case, and provide some background information on key concepts and applications. The graphics also highlight links to related concepts in other cases for exanding the scope of your presentations.
